Why should I have a bit fit?
A bit fit is essential for ensuring your horse’s comfort, well-being, and performance under saddle. A properly fitted bit can:
- Improve communication between horse and rider.
- Resolve or reduce behavioural issues caused by discomfort.
- Enhance your horse’s responsiveness and relaxation.
- To ensure the bit meets your current training level.
- Maximise comfort.
Bit fitting is a critical step in helping your horse perform at its best while staying comfortable and happy.
What’s involved in a bit fitting?
A bit fitting session is a thorough process that includes:
- Consultation: Discuss your horse’s history, current bit, and riding goals.
- Physical Examination: Evaluate your horse’s mouth, teeth, and overall oral health to identify sensitivities or issues.
- Riding Observation: Observe how your horse responds to its current bit.
- Trial a selection of suitable bits based on the findings: Assess how alternate bits function when you ride and how the horse responds.
- Final Recommendation: Recommend the best-fitting bit for your horse ensuring it improves performance and comfort, based on their unique needs.
Will a bit fit magically fix my horse’s issues?
No – while a well-fitted bit can significantly improve comfort and communication, it’s just one part of a much bigger picture. Your horse’s overall way of going is influenced by many factors including saddle fit, dental care, bodywork, and farrier services. These all play a crucial role in their comfort, health, and performance.
It’s also important to consider the horse’s level of education, the rider’s experience, and existing habits – all of which can impact behaviour and performance. A bit fit is an important piece of the puzzle, but real improvement comes from looking at the whole horse.
Is it best to have my horses teeth up to date prior to a fitting?
Yes, it is highly recommended to have your horse’s teeth up to date before a bit fitting. Dental health plays a crucial role in how the bit sits in the mouth and how comfortable your horse will be during the fitting and while riding. Sharp edges, uneven teeth, or other dental issues can affect the bit’s effectiveness and your horse’s response to it. By ensuring their teeth are in good condition, you’ll get the most accurate and beneficial bit fitting results.
Can I take the bit away straight after the fitting?
Unfortunately, it’s not possible to stock every bit in all sizes during the fitting. After the session, you will need to purchase the bit that fits your horse’s needs. You are free to source the bit yourself, or I can assist in ordering it for you for convenience.
I can’t find the exact bit you recommended. I found one that looks similar — will that be okay?
It might be! Some bits may look similar but can have very different actions due to subtle changes in materials, mouthpiece design, joint angles, or cheekpiece mechanics. If you’ve found an alternative, feel free to send through a link or photo so I can check whether it’s a suitable match. I’m happy to help confirm if it’s a good substitute or suggest a better option if needed.
What happens after the bit fit?
After the bit fitting session:
- I will provide a full written report within approx. 1 week, detailing the fitting process, the bit decided upon, and any additional recommendations.
- There is no obligation to purchase a bit from me, and you are welcome to source it from any supplier. However, if preferred, I can order the bit for you and have it delivered directly to save you the hassle.
Do I need to ride during the fitting?
Not always. While seeing the horse ridden can help with assessment, we can still complete a thorough fitting from the ground. If you’re unsure or have a green horse or nervous rider, we’ll work with what’s best for you and your horse.
What should I have ready for the fitting?
Please have your current bridle, any bits you’re using or have tried, your saddle, and a clean halter and lead rope. A safe, flat space for handling or riding (if applicable) is also helpful.
How long does a fitting take?
Most consults take about 1.25 to 1.5 hours. This allows plenty of time to assess your horse, trial bits (if needed), and provide advice on bridle adjustment and overall comfort.
Can you help with young or problem horses?
Absolutely. I have experience working with green, sensitive, and behaviourally complex horses. I take a calm, patient and horse-first approach to ensure a positive experience for both horse and rider.
Is bit and bridle fitting suitable for ponies or riding club horses?
Yes! I work with horses and ponies of all shapes, sizes, disciplines and levels — from performance horses to pony club mounts and happy hackers. Everyone deserves comfort.
How often should I get a bit or bridle fit?
This varies from horse to horse. Changes in your horse’s behaviour, training level, rider or physical condition changes suggest it’s a good idea to have a fit. Regular checks help ensure ongoing comfort and prevent issues from creeping in.
